Overcoming Challenges and Providing Advice for Female Scientists: An EAS Interview with Brandy Young

Brandy Young, CEO and Founder of Certainty Analytical Labs, recently presented at the Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS) on the characterization of Δ9-THC Enantiomers in cannabis products. In this onsite interview, Young draws from her 15 years of experience as an analytical chemist and explains how others can overcome the unique challenges that cannabis testing laboratories and female scientists face.

In this interview with Cannabis Science and Technology, Brandy Young, PhD, a CEO and analytical chemist in the cannabis industry, explained that educating her customer base has been a significant challenge in her career. In particular, she frequently encounters the need to enlighten cannabis industry newcomers to compliance and regulated marketplaces, underlining the value of compliance. Young acknowledged that there is time and cost involved in the process, though she believes that overcoming this challenge will ultimately benefit the entire industry.

Reflecting on her experiences as a Black woman in the cannabis and science fields, Young acknowledged that there are many challenges and most likely always will be. Yet despite these obstacles, she argued for a forward-moving approach, while strategizing solutions to navigate potential difficulties. Young believes that her unique perspectives greatly contribute to the institution's strength, differentiating her business and adding value to the industry.

In offering advice to other female scientists, Young encouraged perseverance, confidence, and taking tangible steps forward. She recommended acknowledging that challenges and difficult moments are going to happen, so adjusting along the way is necessary. Young urged women in the field not to give up and emphasized the importance of their contributions, encouraging them to remain at the decision-making table.

When asked which part of her career she is most proud of, Young explained that she is proud of her entire journey. As a leader, Young credited of her ability to self-actualize, delve into intriguing aspects of her work, and build a team of young scholars as instrumental parts of success. She is also proud that her business is in the process of hiring of new talent, her mentorship of young women in the industry, and is excited for the future overall.
