Anthony Macherone
Cannabis Science and Technology® is pleased to announce the addition of Anthony Macherone to its editorial advisory board (EAB).
Dr. Macherone currently holds a dual appointment as a Senior Scientist with Agilent Technologies and a Visiting Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His recent work in the exposome has explored associations between organochlorine pesticide exposures and diabetes in migrant populations participating in the LOPLIPOP and MASALA Cohorts. Macherone co-edited the book Unraveling the Exposome: A Practical View with contributions from recognized experts around the world. In 2015, he established an Exposomics Interest Group within the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS), which has led to a full program at the annual ASMS meeting. In November 2018, Dr. Macherone co-coordinated the first two-day New York City Exposome Symposium at the New York Academy of Medicine where 155 researchers from eight different countries were in attendance. In 2020, he co-chaired a four-day symposium entitled “Unravelling the Exposome” at the January ASMS Sanibel Conference. Over the past several years, he and his colleagues have extended the exposome paradigm to explore honeybee health and collapse disorders. This research has identified a putative mechanism associated with Nosema ceranae infection and dysregulated biological pathways associated with specific biomarkers.
Since November 2016, Dr. Macherone has also led a team of scientists in the development of analytical methodologies to support research, safety and quality control for the emerging cannabis and hemp fields in U.S. states, Canada, and several other countries in Latin America and the European Union. Future work will use exposomics to evaluate potential associations with cannabis exposures and phenotypes.

Ep 24, Part I: Data Transparency in Cannabis Testing with Yasha Khan
November 21st 2024Evan Friedmann interviews Yasha Khan, co-founder of MCR Labs, about his journey into the cannabis industry and his efforts to promote transparency and integrity in laboratory practices. Yasha discusses the origins of MCR Labs, which began in Massachusetts to meet the needs of the soon-to-be legal medical cannabis market. He explains the challenges faced, including result manipulation by labs and the impact on public health. Yasha's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) project aimed to gather testing data from 37 states, revealed significant discrepancies in potency and mold results. Despite some states' reluctance to share data, Yasha has made much of this data public, leading to collaborative research and publications on various aspects of cannabis testing.
Assessing Cannabis as a Harm Reduction Strategy: Insights from a Large-Scale Study
November 19th 2024A New Zealand study aimed to assess cannabis use as a harm reduction tool. Findings highlight lifestyle factors, and suggest cannabis-focused harm reduction strategies in reducing other substance use such as alcohol.
Ep 23, Part III: Accreditation in the Cannabis Industry with Susan Audino
October 24th 2024In Part III of this episode, host Evan Friedmann is joined by Susan Audino, PhD, founder of S.A. Audino & Associates, LLC, and co-founder of Saturn Scientific, LLC, to examine the complexities of sampling in the cannabis industry, emphasizing the need for proper sampling plans, and methods.
