A cannabis company in Jamaica has announced its first exportation of some of its products to the US.
In a press release from February 22, 2024, cannabis company Pure Jamaican announced that its tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) products were exported from Jamaica to the US (1). Pure Jamaican and its manufacturer Seven-10 Pharmaceuticals are reported to have several licenses and certifications including a license to manufacture pharmaceuticals from the Pharmacy Council of Jamaica and Good Manufacturing Practices certification (1).
The products were reportedly tested at a facility in the US approved by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) (1). "This is a proud moment for Jamaica, and for our group of companies,” stated Scott Cathcart, CEO of Pure Jamaican and Seven-10 Pharmaceuticals in the press release (1). “Jamaica has long been associated with 'ganja' but never before in this context as a producer and legal exporter of THC as a pharmaceutical-grade medicine. As the only company in Jamaica licensed for pharmaceutical manufacturing of cannabinoids, we are proud to be leading the way to elevating the role of Jamaica in the global cannabis ecosystem."
Pure Jamaican noted in the press release that it had already shipped its pharmaceutical tinctures to Brazil, and plans to ship its products to medical cannabis patients in the US, on the condition that cannabis is rescheduled to Schedule III (1).
"This is a labour of love and not easy,” stated Dr. Ellen Campbell Grizzle, Pure Jamaican’s Chief Regulatory and Compliance Officer (1). “Jamaica has 52% of the world's medicinal plants in our small island nation, and we are very proud to be exploring ways to identify new botanical medicines to bring health, wellness, new exports and economic growth to our country."
Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), the country’s trade and investment promotion corporation, also commented in the press release (1,2). "The growth of the cannabis industry for medicinal purposes has been a priority of the Government of Jamaica and particularly, the export of value-added products from Jamaica,” stated Shullette Cox, President of JAMPRO (1). “The success of Pure Jamaican and Seven-10 Pharmaceuticals is applauded as JAMPRO continues to facilitate the local medicinal cannabis industry and ensuring its role in driving the growth of exports."
