On April 17, 2025, the 2024 National Hemp Report1 was released by National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), which collects agriculture-related data for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The report used the Hemp Production and Disposition Inquiry to collect information from all 50 states on acreage, yield, production, and price data from February to March 2025. The survey was completed with collaborative efforts from the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), Farm Service Agency (FSA), Risk Management Agency (RMA), Economic Research Service (ERS), and the Office of Chief Economist (OCE), according to the Agricultural Statistics Board Briefing2.
The report states that the industrial hemp value for 2024 totaled $445 million for hemp grown in the open and under protection, an increase of 40% from 2023.
Other highlighted data included in the report:
- Compared with 2023, industrial hemp grown in the open numbers increased. Planted area totaled 45,294 acres, an increase of 64%; value of hemp production totaled $417 million, an increase of 46%; and area harvested totaled 32,694 acres, an increase of 55%
- Similarly, floral hemp grown in the open saw increases. Floral hemp production totaled an estimated 20.8 million pounds, an increase of 159%; area harvested was an estimated 11,827 acres, an increase of 60%; the average yield was 1,757 pounds per acre, an increase of 669 pounds; and the value of hemp totaled $386 million, an increase of 43%
- Grain hemp grown in the open totaled 3.41 million pounds, an increase of 10%; and the area harvested totaled an estimated at 4,863 acres, an increase of 22%. However, the average yield was an estimated 702 pounds per acre, which was a decrease of 77 pounds. The value totaled $2.62 million, which was an increase of 13%
- For fiber hemp grown in the open, production was an estimated 60.4 million pounds, a 23% increase from last year; area harvested totaled an estimated 18,855 acres, an increase of 56%. However, the average yield was an estimated 3,205 pounds per acre, a decrease of 848 pounds; and the value totaled $11.2 million, a decrease of 3%
- Production of seed hemp grown in the open totaled an estimated 697,000 pounds, a 7% decrease from 2023. However, area harvested was an estimated 2,160 acres, an increase of 61%; the average yield was 323 pounds per acre, a decrease of 236 pounds; and the value totaled $16.9 million, a 482% increase
- 3.52 million square feet under protection was used by hemp growers in 2024, an increase of 9% from last year, while the value of hemp production under protection decreased 13% for a total of $28.7 million
The sample size for the acreage and production survey totaled 8153 producers across the country.
Additionally, hemp clones and transplants grown under protection decreased 62% for a total of 356,000 plants, and their value decreased 49% to total $446,000 in 2024. Floral hemp grown under protection had decreased 35% for a total of 49,420 pounds in 2024. The value of hemp grown under protection for seed increased 91% for a total of 2364 pounds, while the value increased 64% for a total 0f $10.3 million.
