In a January 9, 2025, press release, Prodigy Processing Solutions and ProXtracts Processing Inc. announced a partnership for the formation of a new hydrocarbon extraction laboratory in New York (1). Operations are expected to begin in February 2025.

Prodigy is a manufacturer of GMP-compliant cannabis and hemp extraction equipment, and ProXtracts, based in the Bronx, New York, is a producer of cannabis oil, distillate, and concentrates. It specializes in extraction, infusing and blending, and packaging, labeling, and branding.

The new laboratory will reportedly be the first of its kind in New York City. Additionally, ProXtracts is the holder of New York City’s first and only Tier 1 Processor License. "Securing the only Tier 1 Processor License in New York City is a tremendous honor and responsibility," stated Sean Maguire, Founder and Vice President of ProXtracts, in the press release. "To uphold our mission of delivering the safest, highest-quality cannabis products to the New York market, we chose Prodigy's cutting-edge extraction technology as it aligns seamlessly with our commitment to consumer safety."

Having legalized recreational cannabis in 2021, New York reached $1 billion in retail sales for the state’s cannabis industry by the end of 2024, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul (2). Consumption of cannabis was also reported to have increased, with 67% of consumers reporting purchasing their products from legal retail establishments.

"We are proud to support ProXtracts as they lead the charge in New York's burgeoning cannabis market," stated Marc Beginin, Founder and CEO of Prodigy Processing Solutions. "As the only cannabis processor in all five boroughs licensed to use hydrocarbon solvent technology, ProXtracts is setting the benchmark of excellence in consumer safety, product quality, and regulatory compliance. With Prodigy's equipment, they will be equipped to meet the strictest regulatory standards while driving innovation in the heart of The Bronx."

Hydrocarbon extraction, the press release states, is considered the gold standard for producing cannabis oil concentrates.

Prodigy’s ProX 20 extraction system meets US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements, and the company will also provide toll processing services for cannabis cultivators and manufacturers in the state, in addition to offering in-house products.

"We're not just building a business; we're building trust with New York's cannabis consumers," Maguire also stated. "With Prodigy by our side, we are setting the standard for what safe, high-quality cannabis products should be."

Last year, Prodigy Processing Solutions announced it had partnered with Refined Processes LLC, a cannabis oil processing company, aiming to establish the country’s first GMP-compliant pharmaceutical cannabis extraction facility (3). The plan was in response to the anticipated opportunities for sale and distribution of cannabis products resulting from cannabis rescheduling.
