Here, Scott Mazza, Founder of Vitality CBD, discusses applying cannabidiol (CBD) in pets.
Animals and humans aren’t so different. Cats, like us, can suffer from anxiety and depression. Dogs, also like us, can struggle with arthritis. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that our four-legged friends can – just like their owners – find relief and benefits in cannabidiol (CBD).
However, from dosing to product selection, key considerations arise when safely and effectively applying CBD for pets. Let’s explore what emerging research reveals about this new frontier of cannabis-based treatments and examine the pet owner’s roadmap to responsible CBD use.
First things first – there can be great benefits in administering CBD to your animal. Again, much like in humans, the non-psychotropic phytocannabinoid can bring about a range of positive changes thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
The Annual Review of Animal Biosciences reports that, in companion animals, CBD appears to be well-tolerated by pets, with good bioavailability and minimal side effects when administered at appropriate doses. Studies on dogs have shown the potential benefits of CBD for conditions such as osteoarthritis, skin irritation, and epilepsy. Meanwhile, in other studies focused on cats, scientists are investigating the anecdotal and exploring potential applications for conditions like pain, anxiety, and behavioral issues.
Further good news is that companion animals tend to physically respond well to the compound. In a 90-day study on beagles, Frontiers in Veterinary Science found that cannabinoids were well tolerated with adverse events being exceedingly rare, about 2 incidents per million administrations, with serious events even less likely at 0.01 per million. Based on this and other studies, researchers report that hemp-derived cannabinoids are best administered to healthy dogs at a dose of 5 mg/kg body weight/day. For cats, another study in the same journal found the right dose to be 4 mg/kg body weight/day.
But, and this is key, factors like dosage must be carefully calculated and administered. Despite the noted similarities, animals are still animals and have different physiological needs to humans. Therefore, let’s look at the main factors pet owners should keep in mind if looking to improve their pet’s well-being with CBD.
There are some best practices to keep in mind. First, as touched upon, selecting the right dose is paramount. Before giving your dog CBD, consult with a veterinarian and take into account the animal’s weight. A good rule of thumb for CBD dosing your dog is six drops of oil for every ten pounds of the animal. Of course, be sure to carefully monitor their reaction and go slow and steady. For example, it’s ideal to start this well-being routine with only a few drops and build up over time.
Second, seek out full-spectrum CBD. These types of products – composed of the most complete extraction of the hemp plant with all of its cannabinoids and terpenes – introduce other helpful and supportive compounds to your animal. Emerging research shows the various elements of the plant work in tandem to produce an “entourage effect” – impacting your animal’s endocannabinoid system more effectively as a group than alone.
Third, read the label. All of the necessary information about the recipe, producer, and product should be here. Confirm the formulation is specifically for animals since the kinds of ingredients that work well in human products don’t always work well in animal products. Likewise, keep an eye out for an organic tick of approval, and what the product says about third-party testing for purity and potency. If this kind of information is not here, or difficult to understand, it’s a red flag.
Unfortunately, there are bad actors in this market and specific things that you, as a consumer and pet owner, shouldn’t do.
First, don’t buy products if the aformentioned information is not easily accessible or readily available. Thanks to weak regulation and oversight, this is a cowboy market and there remain some active bad producers. Particularly egregious is the fact that some products don’t correctly test the CBD contents of their products. This is not only irresponsible on their part but potentially dangerous for your animal. Again, what the label does and doesn’t disclose should be a good indicator of the product and producer. If said product doesn’t mention testing, reach out directly and ask for it.
Don’t be led by price. Products with an especially low price point may cut corners or use harsh chemical processes to isolate their cannabis compounds. This is better for your wallet, but unlikely to be great for your pet. Instead, select your products based on quality – your best friend deserves only the best.
Clearly, don’t forget your due diligence. This market warrants your oversight, especially when it comes to the health and well-being of your pet. Read reviews, look online, and ask other pet owners for recommendations. You’ll notice pretty quickly which brands look and sound right and which ones don’t.
While it’s crucial to be aware of potential risks and exercise caution, the benefits of CBD for pets are increasingly apparent. With diligent research and a discerning eye, pet owners can navigate this emerging market to find high-quality products that genuinely benefit their animals. The potential improvements in the animal’s physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life make CBD a compelling option worth exploring.
Cats and dogs, with their sensitive natures, may particularly benefit from the carefully measured introduction of CBD. From managing chronic conditions to easing anxiety, the applications are diverse and promising. As with any new treatment, however, it's essential to proceed thoughtfully and ideally under the guidance of a veterinarian. When approached responsibly, introducing CBD to our pets is a step worth taking.
