On April 8, 2025, the US Hemp Roundtable, a national advocacy organization in the hemp industry, announced that General Counsel Jonathan Miller would be testifying on Wednesday, April 9 before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability at a hearing titled, “Restoring Trust in FDA: Rooting Out Illicit Products.”
As the press release explained, Miller will explain the need for regulation of hemp-derived cannabinoid products, advocating for a science-backed regulatory framework to guarantee consumer safety, provide support for responsible manufacturers, and remove gray areas that have resulted in harmful practices.
“I’m honored to testify before Congress once again on behalf of the U.S. hemp industry,” stated Miller. “This hearing represents an important step in the policymaking process as we continue working toward common-sense regulation of hemp-derived cannabinoids. We appreciate the Committee’s attention to this critical issue and especially thank Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) for his steadfast support of our industry. There is a clear path forward—one that avoids bans, supports small businesses, and ensures adult-use products stay out of the hands of minors. I look forward to discussing these solutions at tomorrow’s hearing.”
Last week, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer had announced the hearing details in a press release.
“President Trump is taking action to Make America Healthy Again, rolling back the disastrous policies of the Biden Administration that put bureaucracy ahead of Americans,” stated Comer. “The Biden FDA stifled innovation with red tape while allowing counterfeit and dangerous products to flood our communities. The Biden border crisis only made things worse, allowing illicit drugs and unsafe goods to come into our country. President Trump’s crackdown at the southern border is already limiting the influx of illicit products coming into our nation. With newly confirmed FDA Commissioner Makary, we finally have a leader who will put Americans’ safety first, not special interests and bureaucrats. We look forward to working together to restore integrity to our food and drug supply and hearing from our expert witnesses on how we can achieve this goal.”
Along with Miller, several additional expert witnesses will testify in tomorrow’s hearing: Guy Bentley, Director of Consumer Freedom at Reason Foundation; Richard Williams, Senior Affiliated Scholar at the Mercatus Center; Shabbir Imber Safdar, Executive Director, The Partnership for Safe Medicines; and a former FDA commissioner, Dr. David Kessler.
The hearing will be streamed live April 9 at 10:00am ET.
In 2023, Miller testified before the Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services in the hearing, “Hemp in the Modern World: The Yearslong Wait for FDA Action,” explaining how the lack of a federal framework has resulted in unregulated products, raised safety concerns, and negatively affected markets and farmers. He also explained possible legislative solutions and urged a regulatory pathway for the hemp industry.
